“Throughout the liturgy, music is not a decoration

but part of the central action itself.

What we do in the liturgy is too vast and too deep

to be left to our speaking voices.

We need music so that we can fully express what we are about.”

“We sing at the liturgy not because it is nice to do so,

or that it might make more splendor and solemn

the service – rather we sing because we need to.

We sing as a community of faith, as the Body of Christ.

Music (as all art) can lift us beyond ourselves,

beyond our present situation,

beyond whatever hopelessness we may find ourselves.

Music can point the way to the other side.”
